The Continuation Ballot is due in September "Local democracy doesn't get more local than this"
Jan Davis writes: In September, the Continuation Ballot will arrive on your doormat. As always there will be just one question to answer. A simple one that goes something like this: Do you want PETRA to continue to run the estate, or would you prefer the Council to run it?
Who's asking? It is part of PETRA’s management agreement with the Council that every five years we are required to consult with tenants and leaseholders on the future management of the estate. This consultation takes the form of a secret ballot, held over two weeks. We call it the continuation ballot.
Why Is it important? This is your chance to judge how effective your tenant management organisation – PETRA – has been over the last five years, and whether you want us to continue to manage the estate in accordance with the current management agreement.
What happens afterwards? In September, you will have two weeks to cast your vote. When the ballot closes, Council officers will oversee the count. If the majority of you vote for PETRA to continue to manage the estate, that is what we will do. If the majority votes against PETRA continuing to manage the estate, we will have just 21 days to give the Council three months’ written notice to end the management agreement. PETRA will then cease to manage the estate, the office will close, and the estate will revert to being run by the Council.
Please give careful thought before casting your vote.
Summer Special Sunday 15th July marked our 15th birthday, so PETRA organised and ran another of our Fun Days on the green. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success. The weather was wonderful, the football (now England were out) only mildly distracting, and the event served to remind us of two important things: 1) Community is what we make of it, and 2) With PETRA, residents can, by their own efforts, make good things happen.
PETRA's Guide to Rubbish and Recycling Do you have trouble knowing what to put where? Then take a look at our new brochure, where all is explained.
Above: This is what happens when residents fail to dispose of their rubbish properly - a backlog of poorly-secured trash, much of it in the wrong place!
Please show pride in our estate by disposing of your rubbish properly.
Need help with computers? Residents sometimes ask us for help with using computers. In fact, there is help available nearby. ICT Skills Training Both at the Betty Strathern Centre in Harold Hill and at the Mardyke Community Centre in Rainham, ICT Skills Training provide free basic computer courses to local adult communities in and around East London and Essex.
Training ranges from the basics, such as how to turn on a computer, searching the Internet, creating and using emails, to more advanced accredited courses using the Microsoft Office programs. For the accredited courses, there would be a small charge towards the cost of your second qualification certification.

Help with forms? Some PETRA Committee members and our Estate Manager, Caroline, have a wealth of experience in different areas. For example we can help if you are unsure how to: - fill in a form - write a CV - write a formal letter - write a reference
Come into the PETRA office and see if we can help you.
